
Numerology is a general term used to describe any method of pairing numeric calculations with mysticism. There are a large number of different belief systems that are encompassed by the blanket term. Some people believe that the length of human lives, and the events of the world can be predicted through the use of numbers. Others believe that comparability, and other factors of life can be affected by these numeric calculations.
Numerology
Most modern forms of numerology are based off ancient beliefs, and cultures such as the Babylonians. Even early Christian mysticism contained some aspects of numerology, as does the Hebrew Kabbalah system.
Philosophers, such as the noted mathematician Pythagoras, believed that mathematical concepts held the keys to unlocking knowledge. Early Church Fathers were known to openly condemn the use of numbers for magical purposes. The church took a hard stand against any system that rested solely on numbers. Despite this it was also believed that the numbers contained in the Holy Writ held a magical meaning, and the understanding of these mystical meanings was considered an important position.
Depending on the system being used the numbers can be assigned different meanings. In some systems the numbers are linked to alphabetic systems. This is one method that is practiced by the Hebrew Kabbalah. Based on tradition, the mystical meaning of the words can be based on the value of their numerical assignment.
By contrast Chinese types assigns different meanings to the numbers. Some number combinations are considered more lucky than others. This especially applies to even numbers, as the long-standing belief is that good things come in pairs. Acupuncture, and other traditional Chinese medicine often based, the science of their art on mystical calculations. One example of this, is the belief that the 12 vessels which circulate air, and blood through the body are related to the 12 rivers which flow into the Central Kingdom.
Sometimes even scientific theories can aquire the name tag of Numerology. In some cases when inspirations come from a set of patterns, as opposed to scientific observation, the theory may be derided. Several significant discoveries have come as a result of research along these lines however, and the discovery of atomic triads can be attributed to this type of numerological study.
Other forms of numerological beliefs can be as simple as someone betting on lucky numbers. Many gamblers employ a form of numerology, and while there is no way to improve their odds in this way, many believe that certain cards, or numbers hit more often that others.
While once considered a viable part of legitimate mathematics, in the present day it is associated with astrology, the paranormal and other questionable beliefs. While no longer considered a true science, many people who practice new age lifestyles incorporate it into their general belief systems.

In recent years there has been an upsurge in interest on the topic, and Hollywood has kept the trend on the rise with films such as “The Number 23”. Despite being considered a simple superstition by many, the belief in numerology is firmly entrenched in everyday life.
